Comparing New- and Old World wines makes for a common tasting theme. Arguably, the most famous event of this type was one of the first: It happened on July 4, 1976 and it came to be known as “The Judgement of Paris”.** Steven Spurrier and his associate Patrice Gallagher showed that comparative tastings are a great way to learn more about winemaking regions around the world.
IWFS Arkansas put its own spin on this theme with the help of Petit|Keet’s sommelier Susie Long, but we cast a much wider net than the late, great Mr. Spurrier: The wines that accompanied our meal were separated by the Earth's Equator! Each course featured two wines, one from the northern hemisphere and the other from the southern.
In the spirit of education and evaluation pioneered by Mr. Spurrier, “The Judgement of Little Rock” found that wines from the north defeated those from the south by a landslide!

**For a fascinating and deep-dive into the event, George Taber’s book “The Judgement of Paris” is highly recommended. Taber was the only journalist present at the event, and his brief account published in Time Magazine caused first a tremor, then a massive earthquake literally felt around the world of wine.
