The Birmingham Branch held its second educational event of the year on June 23, 2015. The theme was "Grower Champagnes."  Wines were presented by Jonathan Thomas of Grassroots Distributors and Chandler Busby, owner of Neighborhood Hops and Vine, where the event was held. Our Event Chair was Martha Griffin, assisted by Brad McGiboney. Hors d'oeuvres were prepared by several attendees and supplemented by a local restaurant.  There were six excellent Grower Champagnes presented and served with the hors d'oeuvres. The event was a sell-out, and a great success. A number of our members lingered after the tasting sipping and discussing the evenings offerings.

Our Branch expanded the number of "Educational Events" this year due to demand from our members.  The events proved to be a great way for our less experienced members of any age to expand their knowledge and gain an appreciation for a broader range of wines. These events add another dimension to our event offerings bringing our diverse group closer together.  They also provide an opportunity for prospective members to experience a superior adventure in wine and food.   The value of these events was confirmed by the recent IWFS Americas membership survey, which addresses the needs and expectations of the different ages groups in our membership.

A typical event consists of 6 wines representative of the theme. Food is on the order of tapas fare, paired with the wines. Presenters include growers, importers, industry experts, and local vendors.

Going forward, we plan to conduct four educational events per year. Our criteria for these events:

1. Each event must focus on wines unique to specific regions around the world, their terroir, production, and foods they complement.

2. Events are limited to thirty attendees, priced around $30 per person.

3. Wines must be fine examples of their type; events must be a good value.

IWFS Birmingham is committed to the enjoyment of wine, food, and the camaraderie of our members. Educational events are one element in our effort to meet that objective.
