Twenty-six people attended this event, including seven guests. The theme of the event “An Evening in Mykonos” was carried out in the setting (“The Greek Islands”, a well established Greek restaurant), the menu, and the wines. We had our own room, which was decorated with beautiful white roses in very artistic vases. Mary Mitchell (event planner & of Greek heritage) set the tone for the evening by speaking to us in Greek! Amy Lapsa from the Italian Wine
Distributors in Lincoln was knowlegeable, & engaging in discussing the wine pairings we would be enjoying.
The traditional Greek appetizers,( Spanakopites, & Tzatziki ) accompanied by a Semieli White Rogitis wine ( which had a bright yellow-green color, was dry on the palate & showed marked acidity & aromas of apricot, mint & vanilla,) were paired very well, and got the evening off to a great start!
The first course Flaming Kasseri cheese) was paired with “Xinomavro ( a full bodied, complex Greek red wine, with a bouquet of red fruit,). The combination recieved rave reviews!
The salad was accompanied accompanied by a White Moschofilero wine, (which was fresh, rounded & aromatic) had a taste of peach & citrus), and complimented the salad.
For the main course, we were given the choice of chicken or roasted lamb, (which was specified at the time reservations were made. Guests were given both of the wines, (regardless of meat choices.) The red wine, Theopetra Estate Limniona (was dry & full bodied, with rich tannins and flavors of black fruit and sweet spices), paired better with the lamb. The Malagouzia/Assyrtiko wine (which was a dry white Greek wine with fruity aromas of citrus & tropical fruits) paired better with the chicken. Although both the food & wines were very good, by the time we started on this course, our appetites were getting satiated,, many of us requested “doggie bags, which would be enjoyed later!
The dessert course (which consisted of both Baklava & Galaktoboureko) paired with the Vin Doux Sweet Muscat wine (which was golden in color, & had a harmonious bouquet of honey & appricot) was just too tasty to resist, & our appetites woke up again!
This was a special night for our group, because it was the first event under the leadership of our new president, Jeff Deeths. Our out-going president, Burton Jay was recognized and thanked for his years of service.
We all left with our doggie bags, having experienced a a very nice evening , & we indeed felt that we had visited Mykonos, (without leaving Omaha)!
