Dear IW&FS Members and Wine and Food Friends:

Come join us on Sunday, December 9, 2018 for the annual holiday dinner at Artisans Restaurant. Chef-Owner Jacques Fox has created an inspired French menu paired with French wines, one of which is a first growth Bordeaux from the IWFS cellar. Artisans began in 2010 when Chef Fox collaborated with David and Sylvain Denis (Le Mistral and other restaurants) to bring innovative French dining to discerning palates.

Artisans is located at 3201 Louisiana Street Houston, TX 77006 (713-529-9111). Valet parking is available on Stuart Street and self-parking is available in the garage off Milam Street. The reception will begin at 5:30 p.m. with dinner to follow at 6:15 p.m. The attire for the evening is black tie (optional but encouraged) with medallions.

Wine: Champagne Tribaut-Schloesser Brut Rosé A blend of 40% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay and 30% Meunier with three years aging on the lees gives this wine bright aromas of raspberry and blood orange with a matched lingering taste. Domaine Cauhape, Jurancon, France 2012 This is the freshest of the sweet wine produced by Henri Ramonteau at Cauhapé. It is a lively, fruity wine, full of refreshing acidity as well as pineapple, apricot and honey flavors. The end shows a touch of spice. WE – 95pts 2010 Louis Jadot Savigny-les-Beaune Premier Cru Clos des Guettes Domaine Gagey This comes from a vineyard on the north flank of Savigny's vineyards, about the same altitude as Aux Vergelesses. It delivers attractive aromas and flavors of spicy cherry and strawberry fruit, framed by oak and matched to a firm, linear, stony profile, tight on the finish despite its length. 1998 Chateau Latour Grand Vin This wine is dense, structured and tannic. The fruit recalls the 1988, but riper, and the constitution of the 1986, but less austere. Long on the palate, these wines develop strong aromas of licorice and black cherry. Very classic, the Grand Vin is a typical expression of the power of the terroir of Latour's "Enclos". W&S – 96pts, WS – 94pts Domaine Raymond Usseglio Chateauneuf du Pape 2014 A medium bodied, fresh, bright, pretty style of wine, for early drinking. Still, you get a nice dose of black raspberries, kirsch, flowers, earth and black pepper. Taylor Fladgate Vintage 2012 Porto This has an enticing warm fig bread aroma, followed by gently mulled plum, raisin and blackberry fruit flavors. Light toffee and baker's chocolate hints course through the finish. WS – 91pts
