Mayacamas Zoom Winemaker Event
We joined Mayacamas winemaker, Braiden Albrecht for a special virtual tasting of the 2004 Mayacamas Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, which have been stored at the winery since bottling then delivered to us for this event. Cellarmaster Phil and his fiancé Julieta Williams, and Member Jerry Pivnik and his wife Diane joined Ted and Holly Evans at their home for this Zoom event. We had cold appetizers and the stone crab with Champagne and the Mayacamas chardonnay with the Zoom presentation, then Ted grilled the steaks for the red. Other members gathered as they pleased and we counted our blessings that we could still get together in small socially distanced groups for wine, food, and friends.
Originally established in 1889 by John Henry Fisher, Mayacamas Vineyards is one of the most storied wine makers in the Napa Valley. Grapes have been grown continuously at Mayacamas for over 130 years. The original winery, set in the Mount Veeder appellation, is still in use to this day. While the enterprise ownership has changed hands over the years, each owner has been a steward of the deeply held traditions and approaches to wine making that have set this winemaker apart.
In 2017, the Schottenstein Family of Columbus, Ohio announced that it acquired 100% ownership of the Mayacamas Vineyards. Previously, the vineyards were owned by Charles Banks (managing partner of Jonata and Screaming Eagle) in partnership with the Schottenstein’s. Joey Schottenstein, a co-owner, lives on Miami Beach and has been helpful in setting up this unique experience.
