Norfolk, Nebraska's International Wine & Food Society Branch was chartered over 52 years ago on May 27, 1969. Five people still remain with the Branch today, Earl & Marilyn Mitchell, Thomas and Sherry Dover, and Sylvia Landers. Back in the day, the menu was planned and members were invited to the home of a hosting member and were served by those on the committee, usually four couples. In honor of our first members, a Founders' Tribute dinner was held at a present member's home. Our home grown chefs chose a retro 1960's theme and members were encouraged to dress the part (easier for some than others!). The evening started with arguably the most popular aperitif at the time, an Old Fashioned, Don Draper's envy from Mad Men! Appetizers were Salmon Mousse, Shrimp and Feta Cucumber Rounds, and Cheese Fondue paired with Big Salt, a white wine blend from the Rouge Valley, Oregon, followed by a Blue Cheese Wedge Salad paired with Soave Classico from Vento, Italy. The main course was mouth watering Beef Bourguignon, straight from Julia Child's cookbook, paired with a 2015 La Spinona Barbaresco, from the Italian Piedmont. The evening ended with Bananas Foster Flambe'. Truly a night to remember! "We honor you tonight as you have honored all of us through the years with your devotion and partnership to our group!" toasted our Branch President, Jim Kube. Yes, our founders "Did it their way" and we're glad they did!
