The Norfolk Branch celebrated the gifts of wine, food and fellowship at this Christmas event. Chef and owner, Michael Behrens prepared a menu which was both delectable and perfect for the season. The banquet table was adorned with a plethora of wrapped packages, twinkling lights and fresh evergreens.
The evening began with an individual charcuterie adorned with a red bow. Eighteen month Manchego, Grand Paloma, Comte', Brie and Roquefort bites were delightfully paired with a 2020 Raul Perez Ultreia St. Jacques. This is a Spanish Mencia wine, with notes of raspberry, boysenberry and black cherry, mild tannins and a thoughtful finish.
French onion soup with a toasted baguette topped with tapenade was the second offering, served with a 2020 Secret de Nos Vignes Chateauneuf-du-Pape. This complex red blend provided tastes of earth and dark fruit which seemed to enhance the hearty flavors of the soup. This combination of flavors created a long finish of both wine and soup.
Salmon en Croute on a bed of grilled artichoke and fire roasted tomatoes was served as the main course. This was garnished with lightly dressed greens and served with a 2021 Planet Oregon, Willamette Valley Pinot Noir. This is a fresh, fruity Pinot Noir with suggestions of smoke and soil which enhanced the salmon on the palate.
The dessert course was a true gift! A small divided box wrapped with a red bow and a fresh sprig was given to each member. Upon opening, delectable homemade Christmas goodies from the hosting committee were found. These were enjoyed with a Lustau San Emilio Pedro Ximenez Spanish Sherry........Wow, what a finish!
Of course, what made the evening even more special than that which was served, was the conversation, laughter and the simple enjoyment of friends and warm hearts. We have much to be thankful for and this gathering was a wonderful reminder of that for all.
