Please join us on Monday, February 19, 2024, as we return to Panache --– The Club at Ibis for a one-of-a-kind event that no other branch or club can come close to duplicating.

Madeline Fink has been kind enough to “open up” her cellar and donate all the evening’s wines from her (and Rod’s) personal collection for this extravagant evening.

On January 22, 2022, we honored our past President, the late Rod Fink, at Panache. Rod was a passionate person who accumulated a vast, and highly-rated, cellar over the decades. His collection includes such American “cult” classics as Screaming Eagle and Colgin, and now-impossible-to-get European selections.

Ted has been studying Rod and Madeline’s cellar inventory which reads like a Sotheby’s auction catalog. Ted and Madeline will work closely with Lyon-trained Chef Jerome Nicholas for a curated menu that is a fitting tribute to Rod.

Please join us on February 19 as we remember Rod, and his service to our branch, and toast Madeline and her generosity.

WINE TASTING NOTES

Krug Grande Cuvée

Krug Grande Cuvée, born from the dream of one man, Joseph Krug, to craft the very best Champagne he could offer every single year, regardless of annual variations in climate. Since 1843, the House of Krug has honored this vision with each new Edition of Krug Grande Cuvée: the most generous expression of Champagne. Krug Grande Cuvée is re-created every year beyond the notion of vintage and is a blend of over 120 individual wines from more than 10 different years. The fullness or flavors and aromas achieved by this careful art of blending would be impossible to express with the wines of a single year.

2014 Vineyard 7 & 8 Chardonnay Estate

The 2014 Chardonnay Estate spent 16 months in barrel and goes through 100% malolactic, and it is sourced from one of the old Wente selections. This is an impressive Chardonnay aged in about 50% new oak and bottled with no fining or filtration. Crisp, elegant notes of tangerine oil, orange marmalade and white currants jump from the glass of this medium to full-bodied, fresh, lively Chardonnay that has zesty acids and impressive texture and length. Parker 92

2013 Edge Hill Chardonnay Bacigalupi Vineyard

This is a wine that is now a rarity. It is no longer produced by Rudd’s. Edge Hill Winery. The grapes are from the famed Bacigalupi Vineyard. The exact block 1 from the 1976 judgment of Paris. The winning Chateau Montelena Chardonnay came from this old vine Chardonnay site. The late Mike Grgich was the winemaker there at the time and of course produced that famous 1973 vintage. David Ramey was Rudd’s winemaker in 2000 and that is when he first acquired grapes from this Vineyard. The complexity of the 2013 would be notes of hazelnut, French Oak, crushed granite, pear, and white flower aromas, as well as some old vine minerality.

2008 Rudd Estate Oakville Estate Proprietary Red Wine
99 Point Robert Parker!!

The finest Rudd Estate Proprietary Red Rudd has yet made is the 2008. A blend of 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Cabernet Franc, 14% Petit Verdot and 14% Malbec, it offers up aromas of blue and black fruits, charcoal, white chocolate and flowers. The soaring aromatics are followed by a wine with fabulous concentration, a seamless integration of acidity, tannin, alcohol and wood, a brilliant texture, a fabulous personality and loads of complexity as well as full-bodied richness. This potentially legendary proprietary red already possesses remarkably sweet tannin. It will be drinkable early (because of its density, ripeness and velvety texture), but it should age effortlessly for 20-25 years.

2008 Colgin IX Proprietary Red Estate

The opaque purple-hued 2008 IX Proprietary Red, a blend of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and the balance Petit Verdot (also slightly modified from last year), reveals notes of espresso roast, blueberries, black currants and lead pencil shavings. The wine reveals superb concentration and richness as well as a structured mouthfeel. It begs for 4-5 years of cellaring and should drink well for 20-30+ years. Parker 96

2013 Realm "Houyi Vineyard" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Houyi Vineyard is another 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, this one from Pritchard Hill. Made from clone 337, the wine is again brilliant. Its blueberry and blackberry fruit are obvious, and the wine also shows some violets along with charcoal and some subtle background oak. The fruit is sweet, the tannins velvety, and the wine voluptuous, opulent and approachable now, although it probably won't hit its peak for another 4-5 years, keep for 25 or more.  Parker 96

2013 Beau Vigne Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve
100 Point Robert Parker Perfect Score!!

Beau Vigne has received their first perfect score with their 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, which is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, but there are only 145 cases of it. This wine is profound, with a stunning aromatic display of blue and black fruits, charcoal, graphite, and spring flowers. The wine has a flawless entry and mouthfeel, with a full-bodied density, opulence and an incredible finish of close to a minute. This is an amazing wine that even eclipses the other fabulous wines in the Beau Vigne portfolio. Drink now-2035.
