WINE TASTING NOTES

Baron de Rothschild Rare Collection Blanc de Blanc 2012

Toasty and nutty on the nose with candied lemon peel, peach and dried apricots. Full, fully flavored, quite intense and fruit forward. I like the hints of bitterness with lemon zest, coffee beans, toasted vanilla pod alongside crisp green apple. Crunchy and direct at the same time with lifted acidity. Quite upfront and powerful - well worked but still youthful with tension despite being a decade old. A charming Champagne. Grapes comes from across four grands crus of the Côte des Blancs: Avize, Cramant, Oger and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Plots are individually vinified in small 20hl stainless steel vats and a small proportion in barrels. Lees aging for nine months with regular stirring then eight years in the cellar with 12 months rest after disgorgement.

Robert Mondavi Oakville Fume Blanc 2021

The Estates Fumé Blanc offers a beautiful snapshot of the Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon coming out of our Oakville Vineyard – tasting of lemon, floral, and stone fruit with aromas of mango, a touch of citrus, pine and subtle herbs.

J.J. Prum Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Spatlese 2001

Light yellow-green, tropical fruit aromas underlined with fine botrytis spice, delicate smoky nuances. Medium body, lemony touch, medium complexity, subtle minerality, lime in the aftertaste.

Opus One was founded by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, legendary proprietor of Château Mouton Rothschild, and renowned Napa Valley vintner Robert Mondavi. By combining the great winemaking traditions and innovations of both families, the founders’ singular goal was to create an exceptional wine in the heart of Napa Valley. Opus One, like any great work, arose out of passion. Dedicated to uncompromised quality, Opus One’s sole purpose is to express this vision and passionate spirit for generations to come.

Opus One 2003

The harvest of 2003 began on September 17th and concluded on November 2nd, the day before the start of heavy autumn rains. A moderately deep garnet, the 2003 Opus One offers aromas of blackberry, plum, hazelnut, graphite, olive oil, cocoa and dried cherries. The wine presents a soft entry with rich, flannel-like tannins supporting a sweetness and purity of balance. Showing the vibrant blackberry and black cherry fruit of Oakville, the wine also recalls the elegance of Bordeaux. Nuances of dark chocolate, black licorice and herbs linger on the finish.

Opus One 2012

After a warm and dry winter, generous rains returned in March just in time for bud-break and provided the water needed for the rest of the year. Mother Nature continued to favor the vintage with a superb growing season characterized by moderate temperatures and bountiful sunshine resulting in one of the valley’s most exceptional vintages. At harvest, the fruit exhibited the classic style of our Oakville estate vineyards with incredible depth of flavor, layers of complexity and excellent structure. Picking started on September 21st at the fresh fruit stage of ripeness to keep flavors bright and lively. Through careful and precise management of the incoming fruit, harvest continued evenly until it was completed on October 20th. The 2012 Opus One effuses fresh dark fruit aromas accentuated by subtler notes of forest-floor and graphite. The wine’s round mouthfeel and satiny tannins wrap around classic flavors of cassis, blackberry and black cherry. This refined and age-worthy wine simultaneously offers a long lingering finish, with lively acidity and a sturdy structure at the close.

Opus One 2018

The Opus One 2018 offers profuse aromas of blackberry, cassis and black cherry. Elegant notes of violets, white pepper and rose petals follow and together they deliver a very seductive bouquet. The seamlessly layered flavors build to a crescendo of fresh and juicy black-fruit, accented with hints of orange zest, licorice and dark chocolate. Beautifully balanced, the smooth round tannins and fresh acidity combine to create a soft, creamy mouthfeel and extend the flavors into a long persistent finish.

Opus One 1995

Napa Valley’s 1995 harvest was ideal in almost every respect. A long, cool growing season yielded a mature and balanced crop. Picking at Opus one began on September 22nd and finished on October 11th, a period of dry, warm days and cool nights. The fragrance of the 1995 Opus One is spicy and intense, with hints of cassis and raspberries and with nuances of well-integrated oak. Elegantly structured, the wine shows overtones of ripe fruit highlighted by a supple and generous texture.
