The Annual General Meeting of the Society was held at Bankers’ Club in what seems to have become a traditional format: The AGM is conducted in a short and efficient manner - this year the entire Committee was returned unopposed - followed by drinks and a buffet dinner.
The Committee tries to ensure a large turnout by enticing members to attend through a 50 percent subsidy on the dinner charge if a member attends the AGM. This seems to work very well despite Kuala Lumpur’s notorious traffic jam which delayed many.
Due to the large turnout – more than eighty people attended the dinner – we have it buffet style with a large array of appetisers, soup and main courses, supplemented by Carvery and desserts galore. The special feature of the dinner is the 600 fresh oysters flown in for the occasion!
The wines are generally from the Society’s cellar, which undergo an annual clean-out of odd number of bottles of wines left over from previous functions. The most expensive ones are auctioned off to members during the dinner, while the remaining wines are consumed during the dinner on a first come first serve basis. This is a chance to observe the knowledge of wines of the members when they have to choose between twenty labels!
This was a very enjoyable evening and the thank the President Tony Narisawa for a well conducted AGM and not least providing the Bubbly with the canapés and following dinner.
