The Cricket Club at the Oval contacted us asking if we were looking for venues; and yes indeed the committee room, overlooking the Oval cricket ground, would be a perfect venue for a tasting. That being so I felt that Viognier tasting from different parts of the world would make an interesting tasting.
The tasting will be accompanied by a selection of canapés so that there will be something to nibble with the wines.
Like Chardonnay, Viognier has the potential to produce full-bodied wines with a lush, soft character. Unlike Chardonnay, Viognier has more natural aromatics that include notes of peach, pears, violets and minerality. However, these aromatic notes can be easily destroyed by too much exposure to oxygen, which makes barrel fermentation a winemaking technique that requires a high level of skill on the part of any winemaker.
The potential quality of Viognier is also highly dependent on viticultural practices and climate, with the grape requiring a long, warm growing season in order to fully ripen, but not a climate that is too hot so the grape develops high levels of sugars and potential alcohol before its aromatic notes can develop.
This will be not only a memorable event and more than well worth the trip to the Oval, but also excellent value for money.
