Garden Party in Daresbury

Daresbury in Cheshire is known particularly for two important events. One is the birth of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (otherwise known as Lewis Carroll) in1832, the other being the more recent move to that village by Manchester Branch members Monica and Graham Goodwin. It was at their beautiful home in an idyllic setting that Monica and Graham hosted the Manchester Branch garden party in July. Close to 50 members upheld the tradition of this annual event which once again proved to be one of the highlights in the year of events! The scene was set, garden in beautiful bloom, marquee in place, wine being chilled and food catered by Worsley Golf Club being prepared. Zellina Prosecco had been chosen as the aperitif and was enjoyed in the garden before being seated in the bunting decorated Marquee.

To start, Melon and Parma Ham with an unusual twist of Morecambe Bay Shrimp. Including Shrimp was something of an experiment which proved to work well. The fresh bread rolls completed an excellent idea. In particular to accompany the shrimp, Vinho Verde Portugal was poured and enjoyed. The verdict generally was that the wine was adequate.

The main event on the menu was Joint of Ham with a Honey Mustard Glaze and Pineapple Salsa, Strip Sirloin served with Horseradish sauce and English Mustard, Cheshire Potatoes with Minted Butter, and Salad. Meat cooked to perfection, served by the chefs, cut to your liking!! The accompanying wine Domaine de Valent, Pinot Noir, Pays D’Oc, Albert Bichot was very well received and considered an excellent choice!

A full Cheese Platter selection including French Brie and Creamy Lancashire followed.

Summer Strawberries and Cream didn't stretch the imagination but this simple final dish was found very acceptable.

The young chefs, bar and kitchen staff of Worsley Golf Club enjoyed this opportunity to demonstrate their capability. It subscribed to the ethos of the Society in encouraging the production and serving of good quality food and encouraged positive thinking. The day was a win/win for the Society and the Providers. The Chairman offered grateful thanks to Monica and Graham for hosting this event and thanks to all Committee and non-Committee members for their essential input.
