La Gorce and the Northern Rhône Coed, our 397th Event

Wednesday March 4th

Hosts Ethan Johnson and Mark Raymond

Fifty-two members and guests took a voyage down the Northern Rhône Valley for an all-Syrah, Viognier and Marsanne event at La Gorce Country Club on Miami Beach.  We started the trip with Guigal 2015 La Doriane Condrieu, then a 1998 Chapoutier Blanc de l’Orée, followed by a 1998 Chapoutier 1998 Ermitage l’Ermite, followed by a 1995/1996 Auguste Clape Cornas and ended the voyage with a classic 2000/2001 Napa Valley Syrah by legendary producer Araujo Estate Eisele Vineyard.  These wines were paired with, in order of service,  a Lola Rosa lettuce salad, charred octopus and scallop cassoulet, braised veal cheek with truffled gnocchi, milk-poached pork tenderloin with braised Fuji apples and curry candied cashews, and finished with a cheese and chocolate pots de crème course. The dinner started with an outdoor reception overlooking the 9th and 18th greens of the famous La Gorce golf course where we toasted the launch of our trip with a Marie Courtin Efflorescence Extra Brut vintage Champagne. For comparison, the entire Hermitage AOC is 140 hectares of vines compared to 1413 of Margaux, 5500 of St. Emilion and 16,000 of Napa Valley.
