Punctually at 6.00pm on the auspicious day of Feb. 29, 2012 a good forty members and guests boarded the “Aquarius” for a delightful sunset cruise along Perth’s gleaming Swan River. The stunning riverfront presented itself in a magic gleam and was a perfect background to the celebrations on board. While our shuck master opened fresh oysters from Bremer Bay and Ceduna in South Australia, our Committee member Michael Tamburri guided us through a comparative tasting of French Champagne and Australian Sparkling Wine.
Back on shore we joined a few “not so seaworthy” members across the road at the well known “Incontro” Restaurant where Chef Peter Manfis and owner Anna Watts had prepared a most delicious dinner for us. Continuing with the naval theme, we enjoyed the plump and succulent Surf Clams from New Zealand and a seafood tasting plate featuring various specialities from different parts of Western Australia. This was followed by a perfectly slow roasted, most succulent and “fall off the bone” shoulder of milk-fed lamb from Vince Garreffa’s celebrity Mondo Butchers.
Carefully selected wines from South Australia, Italy, France, Greece, Margaret River and Spain were beautifully matched with relevant courses.
To end this very successful evening, President Ulrich Kunzmann presented Peter and Anna with a well deserved certificate and re-introduced the hard working Committee to all.
