Fine and Mature Spätlese, Auslese, Eiswein, Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese Back to 1949

These remarkably lusciously rich wines are a treat in themselves. Rare and expensive they are some of the longest lived wines in the world.
This tasting demonstrates the degree of richness in these wines by progressing through the full range cumulating in a very rare 1949 Trockenbeerenauslese.

1992 Urziger Wurzgarten Spätlese
1969 Johannisberger Klause Riesling Auslese
1977 Gau Konmgernheimer Vogelsgang Eiswein
1989 Oppenheimer Guldenmorgen Eiswein
1989 Wachenheimer Bohig Beerenauslese
1976 Ruster Bouvier Beerenauslese
1949 Kulter Trockenbeerenauslese

The tasting will be led by Jeffrey Benson who has supplied these wines from his own cellar.

Theme Grumbling Again
Venue Grumbles
Location 35 Church Street, Pimlico, SW1V 2LT.
Date Jun 14, 2011
Time 7.00 for 7.30 pm

Way back in 2006, some members may recall we visited Grumbles in Pimlico. Your organiser felt it was about time for a return visit as it is one of his personal favourites (and the fact it saved him from writing a lot of the copy again had nothing to do with it.).

Grumbles opened its doors in 1964 and started serving good food at non-scary prices and is still doing so today. In those early days it was one of the first restaurants in that area as the relatively small number that then existed in London were mainly concentrated in the West End. The original owner was told he was mad to even consider opening a restaurant in Pimlico. (In those days the rent for the premises was £12 per week – and an average meal for two cost well under £3).

Grumbles is effectively a bistro that has proved a favourite with the locals and prides itself on serving good food at affordable prices. Back in those early days it was also a favourite haunt of the pop stars and the celebrities alike of that era. Mick Jagger, Julie Christie, the Beatles, Michael Foot, Rod Steiger, Princess Diana (Diana Spencer as was), the Mamas and Papas, Clint Eastwood, Christine Keeler were amongst the many who have frequented it.

A Tasting With a Difference
Yes, that’s right – wine under £5 per bottle, AND wine that’s pretty good too!

The criteria for this event is that the majority of the wines tonight will usually be on sale at around £8-10 per bottle but are greatly reduced on special offer and will be around the £5 mark. Consequently they will represent excellent value at far less than their usual selling price.

The week before the event, the organiser will scour supermarkets, wine merchants and other suppliers on-line for 9 or 10 red and white wines that meet these criteria. The idea is that if you like any of the wines, they will still be available and on offer for you to buy directly after the event.

Because these are going to be wines you’d drink with food, it would seem eminently sensible to drink them at this tasting with food! In a complete reversal of our usual format the organiser has therefore come up with a new and novel concept for this event.

Upon arrival you will be able
