Where: Union Grill - one of Cayman’s newest restaurants (in Camana Bay near Agua)
For everyone who is attending, please email us by 9am on Friday, 5 November 2021 to confirm whether you and your guests choose the steak tartare or tuna tartare (and please let us have your guests' names and any allergies at the same time). Anyone who does not respond by that time may not get their preferred selection of steak or tuna tartare.
We will operate a waiting list for anyone who has not responded but now wishes to attend.
Menu: the menu has been designed by the restaurant to reflect their positioning as a city-style grill. As with any recently opened restaurant, there is always a risk that service and execution might face teething difficulties in the first few months of operation. We have met with them several times and had a full test dinner; we (and they) have done everything we can to make sure the event lives up to IWFS standards.
Wines: We have an eclectic selection of wines for this event, which should add to the evening’s enjoyment. As you will see below, the wines vary from crowd favourites like the 2014 Tig, to more unusual offerings like the Chateau Rouann dry sparkling rose.
We start with magnums of Moet & Chandon Brut which comes in a clear bottle which lights up (a novel twist which we are assured does not affect the champagne!). Then:
Domaine de Bongran Viré Clessé, 2010: a wonderful, fully mature chardonnay from Macon
Chateau Rouanne Brut Nature Rose: a very unusual but extremely highly regarded dry sparkling rose: mourvedre, cinsault, syrah etc
Domaine Ferret Pouilly Fuisse, 2017: a clean, fresh 1er cru level classic Pouilly Fuisse
Domaine Drouhin “Laurene" 2015 & Antinori Tignanello, 2014: there are several classic pairings for duck, so we have chosen two for you to compare. A medium bodied, fresh pinot from Oregon and a very well known super Tuscan sangiovese/cabernet blend. Served side by side so you can decide which you think works the better of the two.
Some of the wines are from the IWFS cellar and some are supplied by Cayman Distributors Group, who often sponsor Slow Food events. IWFS wines will be charged to the event on the usual basis and CDG are effectively subsidizing the event for promotional reasons by providing wines at a price well below their normal wholesale price. We have made sure that neither the IWFS nor Slow Food is prejudiced by the costing/sharing arrangements.
Covid Requirements:
We have been working carefully with the restaurant to ensure that everything will be in full compliance with the relevant Covid Regulations. We know that many restaurants have taken a distinctly relaxed attitude to these Regulations, but neither the IWFS nor the Slow Food organizers, or the restaurant owners are prepared to risk any breach of the Regulations. We consider this to be of the utmost importance for the safety of all of our members and the restaurant personnel.
Please carefully follow the instructions of the staff at the restaurant at all times.
All attendees will be required to wear a mask on arrival. The Champagne reception will take place with everyone seated, whether at outside tables or at their allocated seats inside the restaurant; moving around without a mask on will not be allowed.
You must wear a mask at all times when you are not seated at your table. Please check the seating plan and move immediately to sit at your allocated seat. Once you are seated, you may remove your mask, but you must put it on again if you leave your table for any reason. Tables will be placed 6 feet apart, as required by the regulations.
We really are sorry that we won’t be able to mingle and chat the way we usually would. Hopefully things will be back to normal again soon.
