The Vega Sicilia Tasting

This fabulous high-end tasting is one of our more exclusive tasting events. Vega Sicilia is a blend of tempranillo and cabinet sauvignon from Spain’s Ribera del Duero, Vega Sicilia Unico is one of the world’s great wines.  These days, the release price is often well over US$400 per bottle; on restaurant wine lists it’s going to be over US$1,000 most of the time.

We will be conducting a vertical tasting of 5 vintages of the Unico: 2004-2008, all rated 95 to 98 points by Robert Parker (who is not alone in his praise) and one Unico Reserva Especial.

The Unico Reserva Especial is a mixture of 3 vintages and each iteration comprises different years; the theory is to blend away the vintage variations and leave a reflection of Vega Sicilia at its very best.  The release we will taste is Venta 2011, which is a blend of 1991, 1994 and 1998.

We are strictly limited to 30 people for this tasting event. As ever, members will be offered places on a first come first served basis. We do not expect there to be space for guests at the tasting but there may be at the dinner. Please let us know if there is anyone you would like to bring and we will add them to a waiting list.

  • Jamon serrano croquettas

Dinner:

Chef has prepared the following classic Spanish menu exclusively for the IWFS.

Appetiser:

Salmorejo (tomato-based gazpacho)

Second Course:

Garlic grilled shrimp, patatas a lo pobre, spanish pisto

Main:

Rioja braised beef short ribs, Andaluzian style garbanzo pure, charred leeks

Dessert:

Burnt Basque cheese cake

Dinner Wines

The dinner wines are classic Spanish pairings: Albarino with the gazpacho, dry sherry with the shrimp/prawn dish, and two riojas (served side by side) with the pork dish.  The Heredia Tondonia Reserva 2006 (rated 95) is really good expression of classic rioja, and the Remelluri Granja, which as a Gran Riserva sat for longer in oak, should be a good contrast. Both are drinking perfectly now.
