Our Mediterranean Adventure” started with a Vallformosa Cava Brut NV a well regarded Cava producer from the Penedes region of Spain. This is a high quality sparkling wine made by the traditional method.
The starter was a delicious Lemon marinated scallop Carpaccio with beetroot confit served with shiso cresse. It was accompanied by a Chateau St. Cosme Condrieu, 2007 from Northern Rhone, made from 100 % Voignier grape and with a complex, alluring bouquet. The next dish was a Strawberry duck salad, with balsamic dressing with was paired with a Fondoti Pinot Nero Case Via, 2008, a unique Pinot Noir from Tuscany.
There was a choice of main course: Pan fried prime rib with wild mushroom sauce served with rosemary potatoes or Cod fish in a crust of black olives, red capsicum and capers sauce. The majority had the prime rib and enjoyed it with another Rhone wine: the Guigal Cote Roti Brune et Blonde, 2004. This wine which has good ageing capacity, showed notes of beef, dark olive and tobacco holding sway over the dark cherry and currant core. It had very good harmony between an imperceptible acidity and tannins.
Indulgence was complete when the dessert: a Creme Brulée served with Australian cherry was finished of with a glass or two of Dow’s Quinta Senhora di Ribeira Vintage Port, 1998. This is the top single vineyard vintage port from the prestigious Dow’s winery in the Douro Valley of Portugal.
